Martial Glacier II - Aberrated Lux

Martial Glacier II (ed. of 8), 2020 - Framed archival pigment print on cotton rag.

Artists Description:

Aberrated Lux was taken in Patagonia (Chile and Argentina), including Ushaia which is the southernmost part of the world before you reach Antarctica. The adventure was predominantly experienced by car, wobbly hiking on boulders and rocks or slippery glaciers, many fast boats, and horses, which sometimes make you see washes of nature rather than a precisely focussed mountain, river or glacier. I wanted to explore that idea, so I began “painting” with my camera using long exposures and whirling the camera around in the air. It was a very physical activity with a heavy DSLR and 70-200mm lens! It also coincided with a time that I was taking a lot of painting classes and experimenting with different brushstrokes. The resulting images are similar to staring at clouds, where symbols, animals and faces can arise. And although they were taken using rapid physical motion, the long exposure from the camera combined with the sublime of the landscapes of Patagonia give these photographs a peaceful feel. Although none of the images are of under water scenes, they all tend to bring a watery element to the earth.

About Kate Ballis

Kate Ballis (b. 1985) is a Melbourne-based fine art photographer based in Melbourne, Australia. Her work explores the themes of seeing the unseen and she is frequently traveling to destinations that already feel otherworldly, and making them seem even more foreign to the earth we know. In her Infra Realism series, Kate creates unique, colour-drenched images using infrared technology. Her book of the same title was published in 2017 by Manuscript Publishing. Kate came to a full-time art career after studying Arts and Law at the University of Melbourne, and practicing as a media and entertainment lawyer while moonlighting as a photographer. She left the law practice when given the opportunity to assist Miles Aldridge in London. Kate’s work has been exhibited in solo and group shows throughout Melbourne, Sydney, Los Angeles, Palm Springs, Miami, and at art fairs across Europe. Her work has been featured in Aesthetica, AnOther, Wallpaper, Vogue Living, VICE, Forbes and more.
